Inauguration of Catch the Drop Monument – 28th May 2014

The message delivered by Jake Catania and Martina Cilia Debono during the inauguration ceremony in the name of our school.

Jake:  We would like to thank the administration of Primary School ‘A’ for inviting us to participate in this activity.  All the initiatives taken by HSBC Water Programme – Catch the Drop Campaign are close to our hearts.

Martina: In the beginning of this scholastic year our school hosted the launch of the Catch the Drop Campaign 2013-2016.  We were really honoured to have the HSBC Group Chairman Douglas Flint and the CEO Mr. Mark Watkinson visiting our school.

Jake: Last year all the school children drew raindrops and then we wrote slogans on them in favour of water preservation. We also wrote letters and messages to catch every drop and then we put them in the Catch the Drop container, a container which was in the shape of a drop and which was made from recycled plastic bottles.  This Catch the Drop container used to move from one school to the next in the villages along the chosen routes.

Martina:  This time Mr. Joseph Barbara, the same artist who had constructed the Catch the Drop container, constructed something bigger and more static.  Today we feel really privileged to be present for the inauguration of the Catch the Drop Monument,  In the beginning of this scholastic year Mr. Barbara encouraged us to bring to school empty water bottles.  In January as a class we went to the Local Council to see the work on the big raindrop.

Jake: Mr. Barbara explained how he was putting the bottles together and eventually how the raindrop was going to be formed.  Mr. Barbara continued to explain to us that the amount of bottles used to construct the drop was about 2800.

Martina: The General Soft Drinks Company and his family and friends also helped to collect the large amount of bottles needed.  The drop is about 3 metres and 2.2 metres diameter.  It has a 1 metre base of concrete.
