5.1 – Science and Technology Tournament

 

Illum morna fis-sala sabiex nipparteċipaw għas-‘Science Touranment’. It-tim tagħna kien jikkonsisti minn Jamie, Dion, Tian, Shania, Sanja, Ivin u Anthony. Jien ħadt gost nibni l-akwadotti.

Għas-‘Science Tournament’ kellna ninqasmu f’żewġ gruppi sabiex nibnu akwadotti. L-ewwel bnejna piramidi bl-istikek u l-lakstu imbagħad għamilna l-kanen tal-ilma biex jgħaddi l-ilma. Aħna irnexxielna nħallu 250 millilitru.

Ivin Micallef 

Illum kellna is-‘Science Tournament ‘. L-għalliema tax-xjenza qalulna biex nibu piramidi magħmulin mill-istikek. Aħna kellna norbtuhom bil-lakstu. Wara għamilna l-katusi fuq il-piramidi. Din kienet biċċa xogħolbiex nagħmulhom fuq il-piramidi iżda xorta rnexxielna.

At the Science tournament we had so much fun working together to make an aqueduct. We had abput 24 sticks and 13 water pipes to work with. First we got 6 sticks to make a pyramid using rubber bands. Then we did three more pyramids in the same way. Then we put the pipes together  to design an aqueduct.  When we were done we had to make sure that when we put the water in the pipes , the colourful water will not fall on the floor. So we tried it with a ball first to make sure that it will not leak. 

The best thing was that everyone had fun and we worked as a team!

Aħna llum morna fis-sala tal-iskola għas-Science tournament. L-ewwel għa,ilna erba’ piramidi qishom kampijiet tal-indjani. Imbagħad rbatna l-katusi bil-lakstu mal-piramidi. Imbagħad iċċekjajna b’ballun jekk jgħaddix sew mill-katusi. Wara pruvajna bl-ilma! Kemm ħadt gost nagħmilha din il-biċċa xogħol!

Meta morna s-‘Science Tournament’ bdejna nisimgħu biex nkunu nafu x’irridu nagħmlu. Imbagħad bdejna nagħmlu l-piramidi. Għamilna l-katusi u ċċekjajna jekk jgħaddix sew il-ballun. Wara tfajna l-ilma u għaddejna minn kellu l-aktar ilma fil-bott! Fl-aħħar żarmajna kollox.

Ħarġa sar-Reverse Osmosis ta’ Pembroke

Illum morna r-Reverse Osmosis ġewwa Pembroke.  F’dan il-post jibdlu l-ilma baħar f’ ilma tajjeb għax xorb. Ħdejn il-baħar bnew tnax-il kamra u f’kull waħda minnhom ħaffru ħofra biex jippumpjaw l-ilma minnhom. L-ilma baħar jmur ġo dawn il-ħofor għax jekk itellgħuh direttament mal-ilma jitla’ ħut, alka u skart li narmu aħna stess u għalhekk ikun hemm iżjed problemi biex inaddfuh. 

Wara, l-ilma baħar jgħaddi minn pajpijiet tat l-art u peress li taħt l-art hu magħmul forma ta’ taraġ, ir-ramel u ġebel żgħir li jkun hemm mal-ilma jinqabdu hemm. Hawn jitfgħulu l-aċtu biex joqtlu xi bacteria. L-ilma jitla’ f’ċilindri kbar bil-melħ biss.  F’dawn iċ-ċilindri hemm filtri biex inaddfu l-ilma billi jaqbdu trab żgħir sa 5 microns jigifieri sa 0.0005cm.  L-ilma jitfgħulu l-chlorine u jitneħħa l-aċtu.  Wara jisseparaw l-ilma tajjeb għax-xorb minn dak mielaħ biex jinbigħ u l-ilma li jkun mielaħ jitfugħ fil-baħar.

Din kienet ħarġa interessanti u jien ħadt gost g]ax tgħallimt dwar l-ilma li nixorbu u ninħaslu bih.

This morning our teacher took us to the Reverse Osmosis in Pembroke.  We got there by taking a bus ride from our school in Paola.  

Upon entering the building we saw a large poster showing the different jobs that people did at the Reverse Osmosis.  There was also a small aquarium with urchins, salt water fish and an eel.  Our guide split us in two groups, and my group went last.  Whilst we were waiting for the first group, some of my classmates played around.  I decided not to play because it was very windy and I didn’t want to get dust in my eyes.

When it was our time to go on our tour, the first place we went was in front of a beach with several giant crushing waves.  Then we went upstairs and there were three pipes that were the filters of the Reverse Osmosis.  The filters remove all types of materials from the water that are bigger than 5 microns.  5 microns is enough to let the water flow but not any other material, making the water cleaner.  To remove smaller particles, the workers put in sulphuric acid.  This burns up all the other particles.  Sulphuric acid is a very strong chemical, it can burn someone in a matter of minutes. 

After we walked to the control room.  We saw a giant machine  that has been used since the Reverse Osmosis opened in 1993.  This machine is the controller of the whole plant. 

Then we went to see 2 more demonstrations of pipes.  One of the pipes was made of membrane and plastic and it helps filter out saltwater from the freshwater.  The saltwater gets caught in the pipe and it is then removed, whilst the freshwater goes through the pipe.

The second pipe was made of membrane and plastic as well and had a ring of basalt.  The outer rim of the pipe is made out of metal and its inner part is made out of membrane.  At the end of it there is plastic and basalt.  Basalt is volcanic rock and it is used for draining saltwater out of the pipe. 

This was the end of our field trip for today.  We then went back to catch the bus to school. 

It was really interesting to see how the water we drink and wash with is made.

Special Assembly – Catch the Drop

Student 1:  Tfal tiftakru meta ġew tal-Catch the Drop li huma sponsorjati mill-bank HSBC fil-bidu tas-sena l-oħra.  Tiftakru  meta penġejna id-drops  biex ifakkruna fit-taqtir tax-xita. Din is-sena in-nies tal-Catch the Drop se jagħtuna b’xejn self lock taps.

Student 2: Bil-mod bil-mod għax ma qed nifhmu xejn.  X’inhuma self lock taps.

Student 1: Jekk tagħtini ċans nispjega.  Self lock taps huma viti tas-sinkijiet li jingħalqu weħidhom.  Taf kemm-il darba nsib viti miftuħa u ilma nieżel  għal xejn.  Permezz ta’ dawn il-viti l-ilma jieqaf waħdu wara ftit.

Student 2: B’hekk żgur ma nibqgħux naħlu ilma għal xejn.  Isma’ kemm għandna viti b’kollox l-iskola?

Student 1:  B’kollox l-iskola għandna 60 vit.  Kull vit li jingħalaq waħdu  jiswa xi 40 ewro, allura forsi nippruvaw nibdluhom fi żmien sentejn.

Student 3: Proġett  verament  interessanti  hux vera tfal.  In-nies tal-Catch the Drop se jaħdmu magħna aktar din is-sena.  Fl-24 ta’ Frar it-tfal tas-sitt sena ġew mistiedna jżuru iċ-ċentru tal-Ilma tar-Reverse Osmosis ta’ Pembroke.  Hawnhekk se jaraw kif mill-ilma baħar nistgħu nagħmlu ilma tajjeb għax-xorb.

Student 4: Fil-25 ta’ Frar se jiġu grupp ta’ nies biex jippreżentawlna show jisimha  Frozen fuq l-importanza tal-ilma.  Imbagħad fil-5 ta’ Marzu se jiġi grupp mill-bank tal-HSBC biex jgħallmuna iżjed fuq l-importanza li nibżgħu għall-ilma.

Student 5: Fl-20 ta’Marzu se niċċelebraw il-ġurnata ta’ World Water Day.  Se jkun hemm attivita’ fil-Palazz tal-President fejn se jitħabbru l-ismijiet tal-iskejjel li jkunu se jieħdu xi flus biex jixtru xi affarijiet biex niffrankaw l-ilma.

Student 4: Naturalment  l-iskola tagħna hija waħda mill-iskejjel ta’ Malta u Għawdex li se jagħtuha l-flus.  Aħna t-tfal tal-kunsill tal-istudenti  se nkunu hemm flimkien ma xi żewġ klassijiet oħra.

Student 6:  Fit-28 ta’ Marzu se niċċelebraw Earth Hour.  Minħabba li jkun is-Sibt, aħna nhar il-ġimgħa 27 ta’ Marzu se nitfgħu d-dawl tal-klassijiet, il-kompjuters u l-interactive whiteboards għal nofs siegħa.  In-nies tal-Catch the Drop se jiġibulna 200 xemgħa biex inbiegħuhom u l-qliegħ kollu se jmur għall-proġett li għandu l-bank HSBC biex jgħin lin-nies tal-Ghana jkollhom ilma tajjeb għax-xorb.  Dan il-proġetti jismu Water Aid Ghana Project.

Student 7: Fl-aħħar u mhux l-inqas in-nies tal-HSBC qed jistiednuna biex inmorru naraw reċta li tfakkar meta beda jintuża għall-ewwel darba l-akwadott ta’ Wignacourt li hemm Santa Venera.  Dan għalaq 400 sena.  Filfatt il-Granmastru Wignacourt kien bena speċi ta’ ħnejjiet biex iwasslu l-ilma mir-Rabat sal-belt.  Illum għad baqa’ biss ftit ħnejjiet bejn Santa Venera u l-Ħamrun.
